Applicator / Industrial Spray Painter 

TECTUM Ltd is seeking a full-time Applicator to join our onsite team.

The role is mainly based in Auckland, with occasional travel to other regions in the North Island, so the ability to travel for work is required. This is a full-time, permanent position of at least 30 hours per week, with remuneration of $28–$32 per hour.

TECTUM specialises in industrial, commercial and residential roof coatings and surface restoration. We provide protective coating, encapsulation and restoration systems designed to extend the service life of existing roofing and building surfaces.

This is a practical, hands-on role working across residential, commercial and industrial projects. The successful applicant will undertake specialist surface preparation and apply industrial protective and rustproofing coating systems using professional airless spray equipment and other appropriate application methods.

The Role

Key Responsibilities Include:

• Inspecting roofing, metalwork and other surfaces before preparation and coating work begins.
• Preparing metal, concrete and other applicable substrates for industrial protective coating systems including relevant cleaning and preparation work.
• Grinding, sanding and mechanically preparing surfaces where required to remove corrosion, loose coatings, contaminants and other materials that may affect coating adhesion.
• Carrying out mechanical preparation of corroded steel and metal roofing substrates.
• Preparing coating products and materials for application in accordance with manufacturer specifications and technical data sheets.
• Setting up and operating professional airless spray equipment and other coating application equipment.
• Applying industrial protective and rustproofing coating systems (Rust-Oleum Noxyde and other specialist protective coating systems used by TECTUM).
• Measuring and monitoring coating coverage and film thickness throughout the application process.
• Completing detailed coating work around roof penetrations, flashings, laps, fasteners, gutters, edges and other components.
• Assisting with minor surface preparation and remedial work required before coating application.
• Masking and protecting surrounding surfaces, equipment and property before spray application.
• Cleaning and maintaining spray guns, nozzles, hoses and other coating application equipment.
• Identifying corrosion, substrate defects and coating defects.
• Following product technical data sheets, application specifications and project-specific work instructions, carrying out quality-control checks.
• Assisting with project QA documentation and recording completed work where required.
• Working safely at heights

Skills and Experience

You Should Have:

• At least three years' relevant practical experience involving surface preparation and professional coating application.
• Practical experience using airless spray equipment and/or other professional spray coating equipment.
• Experience preparing metal or other substrates for protective coating application.
• An understanding of protective coating preparation, application, coverage and curing requirements.
• The ability to safely use power tools and mechanical surface-preparation equipment.
• The ability to set up, operate, clean and maintain professional spray application equipment.
• The ability to follow technical specifications, manufacturer requirements and coating application instructions.
• Good attention to detail and high workmanship standards.
• The ability to work safely at height and on roofing surfaces.
• Good communication and time-management skills.
• A strong commitment to workplace health and safety.

About You

This is a physically active, site-based position. You must be comfortable working outdoors and at height, moving around roofing surfaces, handling coating materials and equipment, using power tools and spray equipment, and carrying out repetitive surface-preparation and coating-application work.
