About the Role
We have exciting opportunities for passionate and dedicated Midwives to join our Maternity Service in South Canterbury.
As a Core Midwife, you will provide woman-centred midwifery care throughout pregnancy, labour and birth, and the postnatal period. Working within your scope of practice as both a primary care provider and as part of secondary maternity services, you will support women, babies, and whānau while providing expert care across a range of clinical settings and levels of complexity.
You'll work alongside Lead Maternity Carers (LMCs), fellow Core Midwives, paediatric services, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, evidence-based care. The role offers the opportunity to build strong partnerships with women and their whānau, support informed decision-making, and contribute to positive maternity experiences and outcomes.
Our midwives are supported to continue their professional development and contribute to a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
About the Team / Service / Location
The South Canterbury Maternity Service provides care to women and their whānau across the region, supporting positive maternity experiences from pregnancy through to the postnatal period. Our team is committed to providing culturally safe, inclusive, and responsive care while working collaboratively across the health system.

About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Registration as a Midwife with the Midwifery Council of New Zealand
- A current Annual Practising Certificate
- Recent clinical experience in midwifery practice
- A strong understanding of the New Zealand maternity framework
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
- A commitment to woman, baby, and whānau-centred care
- The ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
- A commitment to ongoing professional development and evidence-based practice
- A current New Zealand Driver Licence
- A commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and improving equitable health outcomes for Māori
Desirable
- Membership of the New Zealand College of Midwives
- Evidence of postgraduate study or a commitment to ongoing professional development
- Current certification in neonatal resuscitation, CPR, cannulation, venepuncture, IV therapy, or epidural care
- Experience working across a range of maternity settings

Salary Range
This role is covered by the terms and conditions of the applicable MERAS and NZNO collective agreements and salary will be paid in accordance with the relevant pay scale, dependent on experience.
