Speciality Clinical Nurse, Occupational Health - Capital Coast & Hutt Valley
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is the country's largest employer, delivering universal public healthcare to 5 million New Zealanders.
We provide essential hospital, specialist, and community health services across 80+ locations - from large urban centres to rural towns and remote communities.
Our goal is to improve health outcomes for all New Zealanders by delivering equitable, accessible and innovative care.
About the Role
The Specialty Clinical Nurse (SCN) Occupational Health uses in-depth knowledge and clinical expertise to provide specialist nursing advice, care and support within the occupational health area of practice. This role enhances the Occupational Health service experience for managers and employees, supporting the health, safety and wellbeing of our people. The role includes clinical assessment, care and education, alongside collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to deliver effective, coordinated Occupational Health services.
About the Team
This is a unique Occupational Health nursing role that combines clinical knowledge with strong coordination, digital administration and programme management skills.
Working within the Capital Coast, Hutt Valley, Wairarapa and National Delivery & Enabling (NDE) Occupational Health service, you will support a nationally dispersed workforce through coordinated Occupational Health pathways and virtual service delivery models. Key responsibilities include coordinating pre-employment health screening, managing referrals, triaging requests and prioritising work according to clinical needs and service requirements. You will also coordinate Occupational Health services, support health surveillance programmes, maintain accurate clinical records and ensure kaimahi and leaders are connected with the most appropriate support.
The role requires a high level of proficiency in digital systems and virtual ways of working. You will regularly work across multiple electronic systems and collaborate with leaders, Occupational Health teams and kaimahi throughout New Zealand using Microsoft Teams and Microsoft 365 technologies.
While clinical knowledge remains important, success in this role relies equally on strong organisational skills, digital capability, stakeholder management and the ability to coordinate and prioritise services across geographically dispersed teams.
About You
You are a Registered Nurse with a current practising certificate and a genuine commitment to the ongoing development of specialty practice. Bringing a professional and approachable style, you build strong relationships across teams and communicate confidently with people at all levels.
You are well organised, able to manage competing demands and confident using sound judgement to triage requests, prioritise workloads and ensure matters are directed to the appropriate Occupational Health support.
Strong verbal and written communication skills enable you to provide clear advice, guidance and education, while your understanding of legislation and health and safety requirements allows you to confidently apply best practice within the workplace.
With well-developed adult teaching skills, you are comfortable presenting to groups on Occupational Health matters, delivering engaging and practical education that supports safer workplaces and promotes staff wellbeing.
