Support a new graduate nurse to deliver resident-centred care while developing clinical leadership

Graduate Registered Nurse

Location: Ashburton, Canterbury, New Zealand

Employer: Terrace View Retirement Village

Terrace View Retirement Village is a welcoming, privately owned, 64-bed aged care facility situated on five acres (approximately two hectares) of beautiful, park-like grounds in Tinwald, Ashburton.

We offer a continuum of care, including independent living, serviced apartments, care suites, rest home and hospital-level care, all within a friendly and supportive community.

We pride ourselves on providing personalised, resident-centred care in a warm, homely environment, with a strong focus on dignity, independence and quality of life.

For a new graduate Registered Nurse, Terrace View offers an excellent opportunity to develop clinical skills across both rest home and hospital-level care, gain experience caring for residents with complex health needs, and build confidence in clinical assessment, decision-making and leadership.

We are a close-knit, multidisciplinary team that values collaboration, ongoing learning and professional development. We welcome enthusiastic new graduates who are passionate about older persons' health and keen to develop their nursing careers in a supportive environment.

Graduate Nursing Role

As a graduate Registered Nurse at Terrace View Retirement Village, you will work in a supportive aged residential care environment providing both rest home and hospital-level care. Our residents have a diverse range of health needs, offering valuable opportunities to develop clinical assessment, critical thinking, decision-making and nursing leadership skills.

A typical shift involves receiving a clinical handover, assessing and monitoring residents, administering medications, providing wound care, coordinating care, communicating with residents and their whānau, and working collaboratively with healthcare assistants, GPs and other allied health professionals. You will also gain experience in recognising and responding to clinical deterioration, managing complex health conditions, and supporting residents receiving palliative and end-of-life care.

Support, Development and Preceptorship

We recognise that transitioning from student to Registered Nurse is an important step, and we are committed to providing a welcoming and supportive learning environment.

Graduate nurses receive a structured orientation, working alongside experienced Registered Nurses and designated preceptors to develop confidence and competence in their new role. Clinical support and guidance are provided by our Clinical Nurse Manager and senior nursing team, with opportunities for regular feedback, reflection and professional development.

We place a strong emphasis on ongoing education and professional growth. Former graduate nurses have had access to a range of learning opportunities, including:

  • Ara Institute of Canterbury – Rapid assessment of the acutely unwell patient supporting the development of comprehensive clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
  • InterRAI training, developing skills in utilising InterRai for residential care to complete comprehensive resident assessment, care planning and evaluation of care needs.
  • Regular in-service education sessions, covering a variety of clinical topics relevant to aged residential care, including wound management, infection prevention and control, medication safety, falls prevention and palliative care.

Our approach focuses on gradually building independence while ensuring appropriate supervision and support. We encourage questions, reflective practice and ongoing learning, recognising that every graduate develops at their own pace.

At Terrace View, graduate nurses are valued members of our close-knit multidisciplinary team. We aim to create an environment where they feel supported, empowered and confident to develop into capable, compassionate Registered Nurses with a strong foundation in older persons' health.

What We Offer

At Terrace View Retirement Village, we recognise that every graduate nurse brings unique strengths, experiences and learning needs. We aim to work collaboratively with each graduate to provide a supportive, individualised orientation and professional development pathway that builds confidence, clinical competence and independence as they transition into Registered Nursing practice.
