Assistant Hostel Manager (Duty Manager / On-call Manager) – Wellington CBD

Hours: 30 hours per week to 45 hours per week

ABOUT US
We're a vibrant, boutique-style hostel located in the heart of Wellington. Known for our warm
atmosphere and high guest ratings. We are seeking an Assistant Hostel Manager to support daily operations and act as a key operational leader within the hostel management team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in managing daily hostel operations across front desk, housekeeping, and guest services, with delegated authority during rostered shifts
  • Act as Duty Manager and On-call Manager during assigned periods, managing hostel operations independently when required
  • Serve as the primary escalation point for staff issues, guest incidents, and operational matters during rostered duty/on-call periods
  • Make real-time operational decisions to ensure service continuity, safety, and guest satisfaction
  • Manage, coordinate, and support staff across departments to maintain service and operational standards
  • Support staff training, onboarding, and performance feedback to ensure consistent standards
  • Monitor bookings and PMS systems to support smooth occupancy management
  • Respond to guest feedback and complaints, implementing solutions independently when required
  • Ensure compliance with health & safety, and operational procedures
  • Support stock control, supplier coordination, and contractor access as required
  • Participate in a rotating management roster, including evenings, weekends, and on-call duties
  • Promote sustainable practices in daily operations to reduce waste and improve efficiency

REQUIREMENTS:

• Must have a valid New Zealand work visa or a NZ PR/Citizen
• Must have a minimum of three years’ verifiable experience in hospitality or accommodation operations, including supervisory or management responsibilities, or a Level 4 or 5 Diploma in Hospitality or Management.
• Availability to work weekends, evenings, and on-call shifts as part of a rotating roster
• Proven ability to supervise staff and manage operations independently during assigned shifts
• Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
• High attention to detail and commitment to guest experience and operational standards
