Location: Joe’s Garage Rolleston
Hours: 30–45 hours per week, rostered shifts including weekends
Employment Type: Full-Time Permanent
Pay Rate: $27–$32 per hour depending on experience

Purpose of the Role

The Duty Manager is responsible for supporting the Cafe Manager in the day-to-day running of the cafe while ensuring exceptional customer service, operational efficiency, and a positive team culture.

This role requires a hands-on leader who can supervise staff, maintain high service standards, assist with training, support cafe operations, and ensure compliance with all operational, health & safety, and licensing requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Service & Guest Experience

  • Deliver a true Joe’s Garage experience through fast, friendly, and professional service
  • Maintain strong customer satisfaction and encourage repeat business
  • Meet, greet, and assist customers in a welcoming manner
  • Handle customer complaints professionally and resolve issues efficiently
  • Ensure customers receive prompt service and support throughout their visit
  • Promote specials, cabinet food, takeaway options, and loyalty promotions
  • Maintain a positive, energetic, and welcoming cafe atmosphere
  • Build strong relationships with regular customers

Leadership & Team Support

  • Support and supervise front-of-house and barista staff
  • Assist the Cafe Manager with staff training and development
  • Ensure all staff follow Joe’s Garage procedures and standards
  • Lead by example and maintain a positive team culture
  • Assist with staff communication, shift coordination, and team performance
  • Provide support across all cafe areas when required

Barista & Coffee Service

  • Prepare and serve high-quality coffees according to Joe’s Garage standards
  • Operate coffee equipment efficiently and safely
  • Grind coffee, extract shots, froth milk, and prepare beverages
  • Maintain cleanliness and organisation of coffee stations
  • Restock coffee beans, milk, teas, and café supplies as required
  • Monitor wastage and maintain quality control standards

Operations & Service

  • Oversee smooth day-to-day cafe operations
  • Support opening and closing procedures
  • Ensure service standards, cleanliness, and presentation are consistently maintained
  • Monitor tables, customer flow, and service efficiency
  • Assist with takeaway and dine-in service
  • Ensure tills, tabs, and payments are processed accurately
  • Reduce walkouts, wastage, and service delays

Cleaning, Hygiene & Health & Safety

  • Ensure all cafe areas remain clean, safe, and organised
  • Follow food safety, hygiene, and health & safety requirements
  • Monitor hazards and report unsafe conditions
  • Ensure staff follow safe working practices
  • Maintain high presentation and hygiene standards at all times
  • Support deep cleaning schedules and checklist completion

Stock, Administration & Rostering

  • Assist with rostering and shift coverage
  • Support stock ordering, stocktakes, and inventory control
  • Monitor wastage, cost control, and operational efficiency
  • Assist with cafe administration and daily reconciliations
  • Support marketing activities, promotions, and events
  • Maintain tidy office and operational spaces
 

Skills & Experience Required

  • Current Duty Manager Certificate (essential)
  • Prior hospitality experience preferred
  • Barista experience and coffee knowledge preferred
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Leadership and team management ability
  • Well organised and reliable
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Hospitality or Food & Beverage qualification beneficial
