Senior Barista / Café Supervisor

Location: Coffee Culture The Crossing, Christchurch

Number of Positions: 1

Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent

Days Required: Monday to Sunday on a rotating roster, including weekends and public holidays. Days and hours may vary week to week; rosters are confirmed and provided at least one week in advance.

Hours per Week: Minimum 30 hours guaranteed, averaging around 39 hours per week, and up to 45 hours per week depending on roster demands.

Pay Rate: $25.50 per hour (fixed)

About the Role

Coffee Culture The Crossing is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Barista / Café Supervisor to join our busy hospitality team. This role is suited to someone who thrives in a fast-paced café environment, has strong leadership capability, and is passionate about delivering consistently high-quality coffee and customer service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparing and serving high-quality espresso coffee and beverages
  • Producing consistent latte art and maintaining presentation standards
  • Managing high-volume coffee service efficiently during busy periods
  • Supervising daily café operations and training team members
  • Supporting management with staff coordination and operational duties
  • Assisting with opening and closing procedures, including cash handling and cash-up responsibilities
  • Assisting across food and beverage service areas as required
  • Maintaining cleanliness, food safety, and health & safety standards
  • Delivering excellent customer service to local and international customers

Job Requirements

Applicants should meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Proven experience working as a barista in a high-volume café environment
  • Ability to produce consistently high-quality coffee and latte art
  • Minimum 12 months of supervisor/duty manager or higher experience in the hospitality industry (fast-paced food and beverage operations)
  • Experience completing opening and closing procedures, including cash-up duties
  • Ability to work independently and perform well under pressure
  • Reliable punctuality, including for early-morning starts (see Working Conditions below)
  • Being available to work weekends, public holidays, and early morning shifts
  • Ability to work across different areas of the business as required
  • Willingness to undergo a pre-employment drug test
  • Willingness to undergo a Police background check (vetting)
  • Additional language skills to assist international guests and tourists (preferred but not essential)

Working Conditions

  • Early starts from 5:45am may be required depending on roster demands
  • Saturday mornings are especially busy: a running group (varies from 30–100 runners ) departs from the café, so a prompt 5:45am open and strict punctuality are essential
  • Late finishes (up to 7:00pm) may also be required depending on the roster
  • Fast-paced environment with high customer volumes in Christchurch CBD
  • Role involves standing for extended periods and physically demanding work
  • Limited leave availability during peak trading periods
