About the Role

As a Radiation Oncologist, you will join a dynamic and collaborative team delivering specialist care in Te Tai Tokerau (Northland). You’ll manage patients across identified tumour streams more specifically Breast, GU, GI, Lung, and Palliative, and contribute to clinical improvement, multidisciplinary care, teaching, and research.

This is a unique opportunity to be part of a growing regional model of care, with a brand-new service that opened in July 2026. You will play an important role in delivering high-quality radiation oncology services while also contributing to the development of regional equity and innovation in care delivery.

About the Team / Service / Location

The Radiation Oncology service sits within Te Pūriri o Te Ora Regional Cancer and Blood Service, delivering around 48,000 radiation treatments each year across the Northern Region. The Whangārei Unit will significantly expand access to care for people in Te Tai Tokerau, reducing the need for long journeys to Auckland.

You’ll join a highly collegial, multidisciplinary team including Radiation Oncologists, Medical Physicists, Radiation Therapists, and dedicated support staff. The service has strong academic links with the University of Auckland and excellent training opportunities through our Registrar programme. Advanced technologies including SABR and surface guided treatment are available regionally.

About Te Pūriri o Te Ora Kia ora from our team

Te Pūriri o Te Ora is the name that has been gifted to our northern regional cancer and blood services by Kahurangi Rangimārie Naida Glavish of Ngāti Whātua, Chief Advisor Tikanga for Te Toka Tumai Auckland. Te Pūriri o Te Ora means "the Pūriri tree of wellbeing" and speaks to the many qualities and gifts of the Pūriri tree and our aspiration to provide a place of healing and wellbeing for our communities.

Te Pūriri o Te Ora is the biggest cancer and blood service within Aotearoa, providing care to approximately 40% of the country. We provide a wide range of services including Medical and Radiation Oncology, Haematology, Āwhinatia Te Tangata (specialist Māori Health team), Cancer Support Team (specialist psychological and social support), Research, Genetics Services, and the NZ Familial Gastrointestinal Cancer Service.

About You

As a Radiation Oncologist, you will bring:

• Fellowship of the RANZCR Faculty of Radiation Oncology or equivalent
• Vocational registration or eligibility for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
• Proven experience in one or more key tumour streams (Breast, GU, Head & Neck, Haematology, and Palliative)
• Skills in VMAT, SABR, and IGRT
• A collaborative, team-based approach with strong interest in research and service improvement
