Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders. About the role

Join the Southern Dialysis Unit at Dunedin Hospital and become part of a team that is passionate about making a difference. We provide specialist renal dialysis care to people across the Southern region, and because we work closely with our patients over time, we build strong relationships and have the privilege of being part of their journey every step of the way.

As one of the largest geographical dialysis services in Aotearoa, with dialysis units in both Dunedin and Invercargill, we care for patients across a vast and diverse region.

Dunedin is the main dialysis centre for Southern, providing specialist renal services and supporting patients from Waitaki to Bluff, including Central Otago.

From in-centre haemodialysis and home haemodialysis training to peritoneal dialysis support, respite haemodialysis, and ongoing home-based care, no two days are the same.

It's a rewarding role that combines technical expertise, patient-centred care, and the opportunity to develop highly valued specialist renal nursing skills.

We're looking for a Registered Nurse who enjoys combining hands-on clinical care and technical expertise with genuine compassion.

You'll join a supportive multidisciplinary team that values collaboration, continuous learning, and delivering exceptional patient-centred care.

If you're looking for a role where you can build meaningful connections, develop specialist skills, and be part of a team that genuinely enjoys working together, we'd love to hear from you.

This is an opportunity to make a real difference while building a rewarding and fulfilling career in renal nursing.

What Makes This Role Special

  • Deliver exceptional care — You'll support patients receiving renal replacement therapy, helping them live with dignity, independence, and the best quality of life possible.
  • Champion home dialysis — We're committed to empowering patients to dialyse at home wherever possible, and you'll be a key part of that journey.
  • Grow your skills — Dialysis nursing is technical, practical, and deeply rewarding. You'll develop niche clinical skills, sharpen your assessment abilities, and strengthen your critical thinking.
  • Be part of an MDT that values your voice — You'll contribute to decision‑making for our dialysis cohort and know your expertise is respected.
  • Enjoy variety and flexibility —No two days are the same. Our service operates Monday to Saturday between 7.00am and 7.30pm, with an on-call component supporting acute dialysis after hours. You'll experience a diverse mix of in-centre care, patient education, home therapies, and acute dialysis support.

About you

You don't need dialysis experience—just the right attitude. We'll provide the training and support; you bring the enthusiasm and willingness to learn.

  • Compassionate, adaptable, and calm under pressure
  • Interested in technical, hands-on nursing care
  • Positive, proactive, and able to bring a sense of humour to the workplace
  • Passionate about making a genuine difference in people's lives

...then you'll fit right in.

What you'll bring

  • Current registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and a current Annual Practising Certificate
  • The right to work in New Zealand
