Maintain accurate, compliant payroll across New Zealand and Australia while driving process improvements

Payroll Compliance Officer

Fulton Hogan's payroll team operates as a Group Service function managed from our Shared Service Centre in Christchurch. Our Payroll Compliance team is looking for someone with 4+ years of Payroll Officer experience to support our New Zealand and Australian payroll functions. Payroll compliance might sit behind the scenes, but it has a big impact on our people. This Christchurch-based role is all about making sure our payroll across New Zealand and Australia stays accurate, compliant, and moving in the right direction. You'll work across legislation, systems, audits, and process improvement, helping us do Good Work for our people every pay cycle. This is a 12-month fixed term position, based in Christchurch.

About the role

Step into our team to assist with the compliance of all Australian & New Zealand payroll functions. This position is an extension of a Payroll Officer where expert knowledge of Payroll Legislation is required. This is a role for someone who likes getting into the detail, spotting risk early, and improving how things work. You'll be part of a team that backs good ideas, values accuracy, and knows when to keep things relaxed and when to switch on.

You'll be a vital part of our Group Payroll Compliance team, with a strong emphasis on compliance, accurate processing, and effective communication across multiple teams and systems.

Key responsibilities

  • Ensure payroll compliance activities across New Zealand & Australia are completed accurately and in line with legislative requirements and company policies.
  • Manage key compliance processes, including leave and rate checks, ACC & WorkCover payments, third party payments, payroll reconciliations, and audit support.
  • Monitor payroll risk, identify issues early, and support changes which keep us compliant and improve the way we work.
  • Work closely with Payroll, Tax, Accounting, HR and the systems team to investigate variances, solve problems, and support smooth payroll operations.
  • Keep up with payroll legislation and help build knowledge across the team, especially compliance changes, audits, and best practice.

We're looking for someone with

  • Strong payroll processing experience, with expert knowledge of NZ and/or Australian employment legislation.
  • At least four years' payroll experience in a high-volume environment, preferably processing payroll for 500+ employees.
  • Solid systems capability, including PayGlobal experience and intermediate to advanced Excel skills.
  • A high level of accuracy, accountability, discretion, and confidence working with sensitive information.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and relationship-building skills, with a proactive mindset and a focus on continuous improvement.

Good work, good benefits

At Fulton Hogan, we genuinely care about the wellbeing of our people and giving them the tools and opportunities they need to succeed and grow with us. You'll have access to:

  • Medical insurance and Life insurance after the eligibility period.
  • KiwiSaver employer contributions after service milestones, up to 7%.
  • Parental leave top-up payment with additional return-to-work support.
  • Ongoing training and development, with clear career growth and progression opportunities.
  • Great discounts at a wide range of retailers.

About us

At Fulton Hogan, Good Work is about more than what we deliver. It's how we show up, how we back each other, and how we keep moving forward. We work side by side, ideas matter, and people are trusted to make an impact. We take the work seriously, not ourselves, and when the stakes are high, we switch on and deliver.
