Permanent position, up to full-time 80 hours per fortnight (1.0 FTE)

About the Role

We are seeking a General Surgeon to join our growing Surgical team. We are looking for a surgeon who demonstrates a commitment to high quality care, collegiality, teamwork, teaching and leadership in the field. The successful candidate will manage a wide range of General Surgical conditions and be expected to fully participate in the General Surgical on call roster and manage acute patients. At present this is in a 1:10 ratio, but this recruitment would expand this on call ratio. An experienced endoscopist for both upper and lower gastrointestinal procedures is a must for this position. Interest or post-fellowship training in either Breast, Colorectal, Bariatric or UGI surgery would be an advantage.

About the Team/Service/Location

The General Surgical and Vascular team is part of a close knit and supportive medical community within the Hawkes Bay district. Our team is committed to providing a high quality of care to the Hawkes Bay population. There is a strong collegial attitude, supportive teamwork and active commitments to ongoing education and service improvements. We are a department of 11 General Surgeons plus a Vascular Surgeon, working alongside our junior medical staff and clinical nurse specialists. We have four accredited General Surgery SET trainees and eight unaccredited General Surgical registrars along with an acute SHO and team House Surgeons. There are clinical nurse specialists for all the major subspecialties. Our support team includes our departmental secretary and enthusiastic nurses on the wards, clinics and theatre. We have had recent an ongoing infrastructure investment with a refurbished perioperative area completed in 2025, a dedicated endoscopy building built in 2018, a fully rebuilt outpatient clinic and departmental offices opened in 2025, and a surgical assessment unit built in 2026. Further campus redevelopment is planned. About You

Applicants should be registered, or eligible for registration, with the New Zealand Medical Council as a Specialist General Surgeon and a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, or equivalent. You should also hold an approved higher qualification in Surgery, enabling Vocational Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
