Fixed-term, full-time position for one year

Salary: ASMS MECA 2026 MOSS (NZD 152,694 – 222,476)

About the role

We are seeking a fifth-year Ophthalmology Registrar or General Ophthalmology Fellow to join our team at Southland Hospital. This 1.0 FTE position offers comprehensive clinical and surgical experience across a wide range of ophthalmology subspecialties within a supportive tertiary environment.

Key responsibilities:

• Clinical practice: Engage in three to four specialty clinics per week, covering areas such as Cornea, Oculoplastic, Glaucoma, Paediatrics, Vitreoretinal, Uveitis, and General Ophthalmology
• Surgical experience: Participate in one to two operating sessions per week
• Post-acute care: Provide essential services in the post-acute ophthalmology clinic, ensuring high-quality patient care and follow-up
• Teaching: Lead and contribute to educational sessions for peers and junior staff to foster a learning environment
• Administrative duties: Complete necessary administrative tasks to support clinical and surgical operations

The role primarily involves regular weekday hours, with some weekend and overnight responsibilities associated with the on-call roster. Flexibility to work across different clinical sites may also be required.

You will be a capable and collaborative clinician who is committed to developing your ophthalmology practice within a busy tertiary service.

You will bring:

• An excellent general Ophthalmology skill set
• A team player with exceptional interpersonal skills who builds effective relationships both within and external to their team
• Is solution focused and can demonstrate excellent decision making and priority setting in a clinical environment
• Enthusiasm for teaching and passing on their knowledge to junior members of staff

Eligibility

• Completed at least four years of an accredited ophthalmology training programme
• Completed the required examinations and advanced training placements
• Eligibility for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
• Demonstrated proficiency in clinical and surgical ophthalmology.

Applications will also be considered from doctors enrolled in overseas ophthalmology training programmes who have completed their examinations and advanced training requirements and will be entering their final year of training.

Salary

This position is covered by the applicable ASMS Collective Agreement and the current base rate falls between the Step 1 ($152,694) and Step 14 ($222,476) per annum. Your take home salary also attracts an on call and availability allowances. You are also entitled to continued medical education monies, and an annual leave entitlement of six weeks per annum.
