About the Role

We are seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Specialist Eating Disorders Service (SEDS) within Mental Health and Addiction Services, Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Waikato.

Working 24 hours per week, this is a rewarding opportunity to provide specialist psychiatric assessment, treatment and clinical leadership for people experiencing eating disorders and co-existing mental health needs. Working across both Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and Adult Mental Health and Addiction Services, you will play a key role in supporting recovery-focused care for tangata whaiora and their whānau on their treatment journey.

You'll join a supportive, close-knit multidisciplinary team where no two days are the same, contributing your expertise while helping shape and grow specialist eating disorders services across the region.

Key responsibilities include:

• Providing specialist psychiatric assessment and treatment for tamariki, rangatahi and adults with eating disorders
• Applying psychiatric expertise to support high-quality clinical decision making and evidence-based practice
• Working in partnership with tangata whaiora, whānau and multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated effective, and efficient assessment and care
• Contributing to service development, quality improvement and clinical leadership activities
• Supporting regional eating disorders capability through consultation, supervision and education

About the Team / Service

The Waikato Specialist Eating Disorders Service (SEDS) is a multidisciplinary specialist team supporting children, adolescents and adults with complex and severe eating disorders.

The service provides evidence-based best practice, incorporating both mental health and medicine for assessment, treatment and recovery-focused care, working closely with individuals, whānau and wider health services.

SEDS is also home to the Midland Regional Eating Disorders Expert Hub, providing expert support through consultation, supervision, training and clinical advice to eating disorders clinicians, teams and communities across the wider Te Manawa Taki region. This creates a unique opportunity to contribute beyond direct clinical care and help strengthen eating disorders expertise across the region.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand in Psychiatry, or be eligible for vocational registration
• Experience working with people experiencing complex mental health needs and eating disorders
• A collaborative approach and commitment to multidisciplinary team-based care
• A passion for service development and continuous improvement
• A commitment to achieving equitable health outcomes for Māori and reducing health inequities
