NZREX Primary Care Pathway for General Registration - Waikato

This is an opportunity for overseas trained medical graduates who have successfully completed the NZREX process, to apply for prevocational training which will enable access to work as a registered medical practitioner in New Zealand. Successful candidates will be well supported in this, the third cohort of NZREX primary care interns based in the Waikato region.

About the Role

If you are an NZREX doctor wishing to gain general registration though a primary care pathway in the Waikato district, we are accepting expressions of interest. The first six months of training will be at the Waikato Hospital, Hamilton, New Zealand in generalist attachments such as General Medicine, Respiratory, OPR, Cardiology, Mental Health or General Surgery, followed by three six-months primary care placements.

About the Team/Service/Location

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora - Waikato serves a largest Māori population and third largest Pacific population in Aotearoa New Zealand. Waikato Hospital in Hamilton is one of New Zealands largest tertiary teaching hospitals with over 600 inpatient beds and 22 operating theatres. Clinical specialities include Womens and Children Services, Cardiology / Cardiothoracic Surgery, Oncology and Haematology, Surgical services, and Mental Health and Addiction services. Waikato Hospital is the Te Manawa Taki.

About You

Eligibility criteria for the Primary Care Prevocational Training Pathway leading to General Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) must:

  • Have passed the NZREX examination within the last five years.
  • Have at least 12 months' prior experience working as a doctor (e.g. completed internship or equivalent overseas).
  • Hold New Zealand Citizenship or Residency and currently reside in New Zealand, with a permanent address in the Waikato region preferred, or be willing to relocate to Waikato for the two-year programme.
  • Be fully vaccinated.
  • Hold a full New Zealand driver's licence and be willing to drive a hospital vehicle to primary care sites across the Waikato region.

You will need to provide the following information:

  • An up-to-date CV
  • A copy of your medical degree
  • Three references of the past two employers
  • A copy of your passport and permanent residency or citizenship details
  • Current police vetting results
  • Full or restricted drivers licence / International drivers licence.
