Consultant Nephrologist – Fixed-term Cover

We are seeking a Consultant Nephrologist to join our team on a fixed-term basis, providing sick leave cover from October 2026 to June 2027.

The role is based at Dunedin Hospital and will involve occasional travel to Southland. Our service provides care to a population of approximately 350,000 people across the lower South Island. Our staff enjoy close working relationships with the University of Otago's Dunedin School of Medicine and Otago Polytechnic's School of Nursing. You will join a close-knit team committed to creating a welcoming, safe, equitable and inclusive workplace.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering effective inpatient and outpatient nephrology services
  • Managing patients and leading ward rounds
  • Undertaking relevant clinical procedures
  • Providing oversight of our renal dialysis unit, which supports training and the care of acutely unwell patients
  • Supporting our home haemodialysis model
  • Assessing and preparing patients for renal transplantation
  • Providing outreach clinics, including services in Southland
  • Participating in clinical audit, quality improvement, teaching, research and continuing professional development
  • Participating in the on-call roster

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Previous experience as a Consultant Nephrologist, FRACP or an equivalent recognised specialist qualification
  • Vocational registration, or eligibility for vocational registration, in Nephrology with the Medical Council of New Zealand

Salary and benefits

This role belongs to the ASMS Collective Agreement, The current base rate falls between the Step 1 ($198, 386) and Step 15 ($282,645) per annum. Your take home salary also attracts an on call and availability allowances. You are also entitled to continued medical education monies, and an annual leave entitlement of six weeks per annum.
