About the Role

Joyful Restaurant Limited is seeking Chefs de Partie to join our kitchen team in Christchurch.

Each Chef de Partie will manage an assigned kitchen section, preparing and cooking Chinese dishes and coordinating the section’s work during service. Successful candidates will maintain consistent standards of food quality, presentation, and hygiene while supporting efficient kitchen operations.

Key Responsibilities

  •  Organise and manage an assigned kitchen section, ensuring ingredients, equipment and preparation are ready before service.
  • Lead and participate in the experimenting with new cooking techniques with a focus on maintaining the high nutritional value of food ingredients.
  • Perform food costing as part of the menu planning.
  • Develop and plan menus and weekly specials that showcase culinary creativity and seasonal ingredients.
  • Prepare and cook Chinese dishes in accordance with the restaurant’s recipes and quality standards.
  • Prepare meat, seafood, vegetables, sauces, seasonings and other ingredients using appropriate preparation and handling techniques.
  • Apply Chinese cooking techniques, including stir-frying, steaming, braising, boiling and deep-frying.
  • Check dishes before service to ensure consistent taste, quality, portion size and presentation.
  • Coordinate the section’s preparation and cooking activities with other chefs to ensure orders are completed accurately and promptly.
  • Monitor ingredient freshness and food quality throughout preparation, cooking and service.
  • Assist with stock monitoring and receiving supplies, ensuring correct storage, labelling and stock rotation.
  • Control portions and minimise food wastage through effective preparation and storage practices.
  • Guide and support junior kitchen staff working within the assigned section.
  • Maintain a clean and organised work area and comply with food safety and hygiene and workplace health and safety requirements.
  • Report equipment faults, stock shortages and other operational issues promptly to the supervising chef or management.
Job Requirements

The successful candidates must:

  • Hold a relevant qualification in Cookery, Culinary Arts, Professional Cookery, Commercial Cookery, or a related field, or have at least 2 years’ relevant commercial cooking experience.
  • Demonstrate sound knowledge of Chinese ingredients, seasonings, food preparation and cooking techniques.
  • Be capable of independently organising and managing an assigned kitchen section.
  • Be able to coordinate preparation and cooking during busy service periods while maintaining consistent food quality and presentation.
  • Understand food safety, kitchen hygiene, safe food handling and workplace health and safety practices.
  • Have effective communication and teamwork skills, including the ability to guide junior kitchen staff.
  • Be available for rostered shifts, including evenings, weekends and public holidays.
