Role Overview

Joyful Restaurant is a Chinese Restaurant based in Christchurch. We are looking for Full-time Chinese Cuisine Chefs to join our dynamic team in our bustling restaurant establishment.

The primary goal of this position is to deliver an exceptional dining experience to our valued customers. In addition to creating and preparing exquisite dishes, the ideal candidate should possess strong interpersonal skills to engage with restaurant staff and customers when necessary. The ability to thrive in fast-paced environments, excel in teamwork and demonstrate proficiency in tasks such as ordering supplies, managing inventory, establishing budgets, and determining prices for menu items are essential attributes for this role.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Preparing and cooking authentic Chinese dishes.
  • Develop and implement novel food presentation styles.
  • Lead and participate in experimenting with new cooking techniques with a focus on maintaining the high nutritional value of food ingredients.
  • Develop and plan menus and weekly specials that showcase culinary creativity and seasonal ingredients.
  • Perform food costing as part of the menu planning.
  • Manage food stock and order supplies as and when needed.
  • Monitoring the quality of dishes, including preparation, cooking and presentation.
  • Standardise the portion of the dish according to the weight and cost.
  • Maintain standards for food storage, rotation, quality and appearance.
  • Provide training to the new and junior and other kitchen staff.
  • Ensure efficient operation of the kitchen at all times.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable health codes and regulations.
  • Schedule staff and assist in recruitment processes as needed.
  • Demonstrate excellent work ethics and inspire team culture and cohesion.
  • Provide an unforgettable dining experience to customers.

Job Requirements: 

  • At least two years of relevant work experience or a vocational qualification in culinary arts comparable to NZ qualification at Level 4.
  • Creative culinary skills with meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to run sections in a high-paced kitchen
  • Excellent time management skills and strong work ethic
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
