We are seeking an energetic and reliable Cook to join our busy takeaway located in Dinsdale, Hamilton.

Our kitchen operates a cook-to-order Chinese takeaway menu featuring wok-fried dishes, fried rice, noodles, combination stir-fries and soup-based meals such as Honey Chicken, BBQ Pork Fried Rice and Laksa. Each dish is prepared individually upon order using high-heat wok techniques, manual flame control and real-time seasoning adjustments. Proteins are cooked sequentially according to different doneness requirements, and sauces are balanced during cooking. The role requires multi-burner coordination, heat regulation and independent judgement to ensure flavour consistency and timely service during peak periods.
Key Responsibilities:
Ø Prepare and cook a variety of Chinese and New Zealand takeaway dishes including stir-fries, burgers, fish and chips and other hot meals using commercial cooking methods such as wok cooking, deep frying, grilling and roasting.
Ø Ensure food quality, consistency and correct portioning by accurately seasoning and adjusting ingredients during cooking.
Ø Plan and coordinate food preparation during peak periods to ensure efficient service.
Ø Monitor stock levels, estimate food requirements, receive deliveries and store ingredients correctly in temperature-controlled facilities.
Ø Operate and maintain commercial kitchen equipment safely and efficiently.
Ø Maintain food safety and hygiene standards in accordance with NZ Food Act requirements, including cleaning procedures and temperature recording.
Ø Assist with menu adjustments and support training of junior kitchen staff when required.
Skills & Qualifications:
Minimum 2 years’ relevant work experience in a takeaway or similar commercial kitchen environment,
OR a relevant NZQF Level 4 qualification (or above) in Cookery, Culinary Arts or related field.
Strong practical skills in wok cooking, deep-frying and fast-paced meal preparation.
Sound knowledge of food safety, hygiene practices and safe food handling procedures.
Ability to work efficiently under pressure during busy service periods.
Flexible to work evenings, weekends and public holidays as required.
Reliable, hardworking and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
