We are seeking a skilled and experienced Indian Cook (Punjabi Cuisine Specialist) to prepare authentic North Indian vegetarian meals and traditional sweets in a high-volume community kitchen environment.

The role requires demonstrated experience in Indian cuisine preparation, food safety compliance, and large-scale meal production.

Begumpura Education, Cultural & Sports Charitable Trust trading as Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib, Papakura is a registered charitable organisation providing religious, cultural, and community services. The Trust operates a community kitchen (Langar) preparing daily vegetarian meals and catering for religious gatherings, cultural programmes, and community events.

 

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be responsible for:

  • Preparing and cooking a range of authentic Punjabi vegetarian dishes and Indian sweets including:

    • Gulab Jamun, Ras Malai, Moong Dal Halwa, Gajar Halwa

    • Kheer, Jalebi, Kaju Barfi, Khoya Barfi, Laddu

    • Dal varieties, vegetable curries, pakoras, samosas, chaat, bhujia

  • Planning and organising food preparation for daily Langar services and special religious events.

  • Monitoring quality of dishes at all stages of preparation and presentation.

  • Checking the quality and quantity of raw food supplies upon receipt.

  • Ensuring proper storage of ingredients in accordance with food safety and temperature control standards.

  • Maintaining kitchen hygiene and cleanliness in compliance with New Zealand Food Safety regulations.

  • Setting up buffet service and coordinating food service operations.

  • Supervising and assisting volunteers in food preparation.

  • Maintaining personal hygiene and safe food handling practices at all times.

  • Cleaning kitchen areas, utensils, and equipment at the end of each shift.

 

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following:

  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience as a Cook in Indian cuisine, OR

  • A relevant Level 4 qualification in Cookery (or equivalent)

  • Proven experience in preparing traditional Indian sweets and vegetarian meals in large quantities.

  • Knowledge of food safety and hygiene practices.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Physically fit and capable of working in a fast-paced kitchen environment.


Additional Information

  • This is a permanent, full-time position.

  • Minimum guaranteed hours: 30 hours per week.

  • The role may require weekend and public holiday work.

  • The position is based in Papakura, Auckland.
