We are currently seeking TWO motivated and experienced Chefs to join our friendly and professional kitchen team. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled Chef who enjoys working in a fast-paced café environment and takes pride in preparing quality meals while maintaining high food standards.

Position Details

Position: Chef

Location: Awanui, Far North 0486, New Zealand

Employment Type: Permanent Full-Time

Hours: Minimum 30 guaranteed hours per week

Pay Rate: $25.00 – $37.00 per hour (depending on skills, experience, and qualifications)
Work Schedule: Rostered shifts including early mornings, evenings, weekends, public holidays, and split shifts. Applicants must be flexible and available to work across the roster as required.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidates will be responsible for:

·         Preparing, cooking, and presenting menu items offered by the café, including breakfast dishes, café meals, sandwiches, cabinet food, takeaway items, and other food offerings as required

·         Planning, developing, and drafting menu items in consultation with business requirements, customer preferences, seasonal availability, and food cost considerations

·         Creating and improving recipes while maintaining consistency, quality, portion control, and presentation standards

·         Preparing ingredients including cleaning, cutting, portioning, marinating, seasoning, and storing food items

·         Cooking food using various methods including grilling, frying, baking, steaming, and other commercial kitchen techniques

·         Preparing meals efficiently during busy service periods while maintaining food quality standards

·         Preparing food orders received through online delivery platforms and ensuring meals are packed accurately and presented according to café standards

·         Managing takeaway and delivery orders through online ordering platforms and coordinating timely preparation for customers

·         Ensuring all food preparation and storage practices comply with food safety and hygiene requirements

·         Maintaining appropriate food rotation procedures using FIFO (First In, First Out) stock management methods

·         Checking food quality, freshness, expiry dates, and storage conditions of ingredients and supplies

·         Monitoring stock levels and assisting with ordering, receiving, and storing food deliveries

·         Reducing food wastage through effective preparation, portion control, and stock management

·         Maintaining a clean, organised, and hygienic kitchen environment at all times

·         Cleaning and maintaining kitchen equipment, utensils, preparation areas, and workstations

·         Ensuring safe operation and maintenance of kitchen equipment

·         Following workplace health and safety procedures and food safety regulations

·         Assisting with training and supporting junior kitchen staff where required

·         Completing opening and closing kitchen duties, including preparation, cleaning, and stock checks

·         Performing other reasonable kitchen duties as required

Skills and Experience Required

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience, however a minimum Diploma Degree qualification will substitute the requirement of the experience.
  • Ability to prepare and cook a range of menu items independently
  • Knowledge of food preparation techniques, cooking methods, and kitchen operations
  • Understanding of food safety regulations and hygiene requirements
  • Ability to maintain consistency and quality during busy service periods
  • Good time management and organisational skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to food quality
  • Reliable and professional approach to work
  • Flexibility to work rostered shifts, including weekends, public holidays, and split shifts
  • Relevant culinary qualifications or practical kitchen experience will be considered favourably
